The XX – Crystalised

13 03 2013

The first single by the brilliant London-based band, released on their self-titled debut album in 2009. Unsurprisingly so, the album won the Mercury Music Prize and is definitely worth a listen from start to finish.

This album is the marijuana equivalent of sound – your gateway to discovering the vast world of creative electronic music. I suggest you let your ears acclimatize to the soft sound of The XX before you toke on the metaphorical crack pipe of dark Industrial German tech-house and Future Jazz. If you’re feeling like the Evel Knievel of musical exploration on the other hand and want to dive in head first, be my guest… but don’t come running to me when your left with your musical crack-pipe in shatters.

German tech house sucks dude

Granted – some German tech house does suck and I leave you entitled to your opinion. However, I’d suggest you try and acclimatize your ears to it so you can understand its musical language, and in doing so I think you’ll find some amazing artists.

Each genre has its own particular sound that needs to be adjusted to. Take jazz for example – a lot of people fail to give it a chance because of its angular melodies and complex musicality which is initially harsh on the ear. Once it’s musical language is understood though, you’ll start to connect with it and properly discover one of the freest Western musical genres.
