Lovebox – Paul Kalkbrenner – Aaron

23 07 2013

So, on the 21st July 2013, I was once again privileged to be in the presence of the one and only, big bald, Paul Kalkbrenner. I was given this experience via the festival Lovebox situated in Victoria Park, centred in the east end of London. It was a most enjoyable event displaying real vibrancy, raw enthusiasm, without the crowd and performance schedule pressures encountered at some festivals. It was very relaxed, chilled, you could meander from tent to tent and allowing the various artists to capture you with their ambient sounds and deep bass. Other than the great Kalkbenner, some other notable acts were Kim Ann Foxman, Miss Kittin and Solomun. Kalkbrenner was awesome as ever, enjoy his closing track of the set: “Aaron”.

Alexi Delano – Molar One

12 07 2013

When the Weekend says “Hello”, I like to reply with “Techno”. People of the world, feel uplifted, feel young, feel free. Embrace the summer, embrace your youth and allow Alexi Delano to musically manipulate your mind and your body. Feel the beat; grapple with its gritty, knotty texture. Bounce and shiver, shake and nod. Become a prisoner to the musical monotony, the infinite continuation of sound. The weekend has beckoned and now, you answer.

Roshambo by Free People

10 07 2013

Summer has finally arrived in London town! When the sun escapes the clouds, good things seem more accessible. Summer is a time for living, for loving, for experiencing and experimenting. This relaxed, beautiful atmosphere is exuded from the film, Roshambo. The shortness of the film really adds an intensity and intimacy as we are drawn into the lives of these two Brooklyn lovers. The montage style merges fantastic cinematography with beautiful music. This intenseness creates a very tight and believable narrative and while you watch a smile cannot but be impressed on your face. Specifically, the shot of the lovers kissing with the sun behind them though the window particularly deserves a mention. It is as if the sun itself acts almost as a tangible, ethereal ball of love that is created through the lover’s connection. This idea relates to work by John Donne, “The Sun Rising” which can be read here: http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/donne/sunrising.htm I feel that this short really does embody the beauty of romance in an urban environment; it is spontaneous, yet stylish. Romantic, but rough. I think we all hope for a bit more of Roshambo in our lives.

NIcolas Jaar – Variations

1 07 2013

On these long, warm summer evenings I like to sit in my garden with a beer and a cigarette, listening to some more downbeat tracks. The perfect artist to come to mind is the exciting Nicolas Jaar. The album “Space is only Noice” is a incredible experience, haunting and beautiful, Jaar takes you on a slow, whimsical voyage, simultaneously unnerving yet comforting, with his interesting combinations of sound. The song “Variations” is one of a handful of amazing tracks, on this truly complete album. To view more of Nicolas Jaar check this:

Fritz Kalkbrenner – Facing The Sun

6 06 2013

Think summer; think sunshine, think sunglasses, think sun cream. Fortunately, in London town the sun has come out to play. Unfortunately for me, I have tonsillitis and am stuck in my steamy cesspit that is my bed… However I have somehow been able to wrench the gloriousness of the sunshine outside, inside. You ask how? Fritz Kalkbrenner’s – Facing The Sun has made my current predicament far more encouraging, its upbeat rhythm and melodic tones serenade. So, if you are in the sun then play this, slip and sink into this smooth sound of summer.

From the album “Here Today Gone Tomorrow”.
